Invokana Kidney Damage

San Diego, CA — July 23, 2015

Invokana was introduced in March 2013, and rapidly grew to become a widely used treatment for type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, concerns have emerged in the form of adverse event reports submitted to the FDA. A large number of reports have revealed a potential link between side effects of Invokana and kidney damage or failure.

Invokana Kidney Side Effects

Invokana was the first member of a new class of type 2 diabetes drugs known as sodium glucose contransporter-2 (SGLT2). Other drugs in this classification are: Invokamet, Farixga, Jardiance, Glyxambi, and Xigduo.

SGLT2 drugs work by impacting certain normal kidney functions, which allows more sugar to be passed from the body through urine. Because of this, questions are being asked about why the increased risk of kidney problems was not anticipated by the drug maker and warned about before the medication was introduced.

In May 2015, the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) revealed potential concerns about the link and reported adverse events to the FDA during the first year Invokana was on the market. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Kidney failure
  • Impaired renal functions
  • Kidney stones
  • Dehydration
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Hypersensitivity

Kidney Failure Linked to Invokana

Acute kidney failure can result in the kidneys being unable to properly filter waste from the blood. This can lead to dangerous build up of waste in the blood which leads to health problems and death.

Some symptoms of kidney failure are:

  • Chest pain
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Seizures or coma
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of legs, ankles and feet

Damage to the kidneys can be permanent and require kidney dialysis or a transplant. If not caught in time or untreated, it can be deadly. The ISMP reported found at least 54 cases of acute or unspecified renal failure or impairment with Invokana, which is only a small percentage of the total number of kidney problems experienced by patients taking the drug, as not all adverse events are reported to the FDA.
