Update: Victim Identified in Fatal Crash at 31st Ave & Southern Ave

Phoenix, AZ (August 29, 2025) – Authorities have identified the man who died in an overnight crash in Laveen earlier this week.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 3 a.m. on August 28 at the intersection of 31st Avenue and Southern Avenue. The Phoenix police say both drivers were hospitalized following the crash. One of the men later succumbed to his injuries and has been identified as 28-year-old Jose Gallegos.

The other driver involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Investigators believe Gallegos was traveling southbound on 31st Ave when he failed to stop at a stop sign, which led to the collision. Police have stated that impairment does not appear to have been a factor.

The intersection was closed for several hours as officers investigated the scene. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances that caused the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to those affected, and we also send our sincere wishes for recovery to those injured in this incident.
