Tempe, AZ - Five Hurt After Crash on U.S. 60 Near Mill Ave

Tempe, AZ (July 12, 2025) – Early Friday morning, a multi-vehicle crash along the U.S. 60 in Tempe sent five people to the hospital. The Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the scene just after 4:18 a.m. on July 11 in the westbound lanes between Mill Avenue and Priest Drive.

Officials say the collision happened when a worker on board a Bob’s Barricade attenuator truck was in the process of collecting traffic barricades along the highway. The attenuator truck, which was set up with proper equipment to help shield workers, was suddenly rear-ended by a Dodge pickup truck. The force of the impact caused the pickup to spin out of control and get struck by a passing box truck traveling in the same direction.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and treated the injured at the scene before transporting five people to nearby hospitals. The driver of the Dodge pickup reportedly suffered serious injuries, while four others involved also required medical care. The exact conditions of the other victims have not yet been released.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 60 were closed for several hours to allow investigators to clear the scene and piece together the chain of events. Traffic was diverted through the area near Mill Avenue but has since reopened. The eastbound lanes were not affected by the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to this collision.

We hope those injured in this accident make a fast recovery.

Auto Accidents in Arizona

Tempe, AZ - Five Hurt After Crash on U.S. 60 Near Mill AveTruck-related crashes continue to pose a serious risk to drivers and roadside workers in Arizona. The state records thousands of large truck collisions every year, many of which result in significant injuries or fatalities. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, these incidents are often linked to driver inattention, speed, or unsafe road conditions. State agencies and Arizona officials encourage drivers to remain alert and cautious, especially when traveling near work zones or large trucks.

To better understand the unique dangers surrounding truck collisions, here are some important aspects to consider:

  • Work Zone Safety Risks: Roadside workers are at high risk when working near fast-moving traffic. Attenuator trucks are designed to absorb impact and protect crews, but when drivers ignore signs or fail to slow down, serious accidents can still happen. Extra caution and reduced speed through work zones are essential for everyone’s safety.
  • Rear-End Collisions: Rear-end impacts are a leading cause of multi-vehicle crashes on highways. These incidents can occur when drivers fail to maintain a safe distance or become distracted. The higher the speed, the greater the risk of severe injuries, particularly when a large truck or commercial vehicle is involved.
  • Secondary Impacts: After an initial collision, vehicles may be struck again by oncoming traffic, leading to additional injuries and damage. Drivers should stay alert and slow down when approaching crash scenes to avoid causing further harm.
  • Emergency Medical Response: Quick action by paramedics and firefighters can help stabilize victims and prevent further complications. Having properly trained crews ready to respond makes a critical difference when multiple people are hurt in a highway crash.
