New Substances May Also Cause Mesothelioma, Study Finds

A new study shows that, while asbestos is still the substance most commonly linked to mesothelioma, other substances such as carbon nanotubes may also be linked to occurrences of this type of cancer.

Is Mesothelioma Always Caused By Asbestos Exposure?

When people are exposed to asbestos, they may inhale tiny fibers that result in a serious type of cancer known as mesothelioma.  This disease is not only extremely deadly but may not show up until decades after the exposure, making it difficult for many people to understand why they are suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer.

Mesothelioma is not only deadly but also has no known cure.  Because the asbestos fibers that lead to this disease work their damage slowly over time, it is hard to suddenly reverse the clock and repair years of harm to the lungs and the chest cavity.

Because mesothelioma is so deadly, it has received more attention than some other forms of cancer from researchers.  Recently, a group led by a top researcher from the University of Edinburgh examined carbon nanotubes, used in a number of technology applications, to see if exposure to these objects could also lead to a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

The results indicated that the long, thin fibers found in carbon nanotubes could be just as deadly as asbestos if inhaled over a period of time.  As carbon nanotubes are a foundational component of many drugs, electronics and batteries, it is very important to determine how and when these fibers might become airborne, leading to future cases of mesothelioma.

One piece of good news did emerge from the research:  it does not appear that “curly” nanotubes have the same impact as a cause of mesothelioma as the long, straight nanotubes.  Because of this, it may be possible to simply substitute the use of one type of nanotube for another to prevent dangerous exposure.

What Should I Do If I Am Diagnosed With Mesothelioma?

Unlike many forms of cancer, mesothelioma can usually be linked to a specific cause.  Because many people who were exposed to asbestos in the workplace many years ago are now developing the disease, it can be difficult or impossible for an individual to trace the parties who may be liable for the injury and file a lawsuit.
